Chimneys appear to be relatively simple structures; however, chimneys are made up of many components that may require repair at some point in time. The most common of these include:

• Firebox rebuilding and repointing. The brick area where you build your fire, the firebox, may have loose bricks or degraded mortar that requires repair.

• Mortar crown repair. The concrete-like surface at the top of your chimney, the mortar crown keeps water out of your chimney flue. If this cracks or breaks, you need to repair it to avoid serious water damage.

• Damper repair. The damper that closes your flue needs to be repaired so heat won’t escape when you aren’t using your fireplace.

• Flue repair. The internal part of your chimney that funnels exhaust from your fireplace to the outside, the flue, must be repaired when it cracks, breaks, or is blocked by debris or creosote build-up.

HOW CHIMNEYS GET DIRTY

Soot and creosote are the natural byproducts of burning fuel. They appear as deposits of solid sticky, black goo on the inside of your chimney. These byproducts are highly flammable and produce an unsafe environment. You can reduce this build-up and increase your fuel efficiency by keeping your fires hot and providing them with lots of oxygen. It is suggested that you clean your chimney after every two cords of burned wood to assure your chimney doesn’t become contaminated with soot and creosote.

To determine if your chimney is performing well, check to see if it has the following characteristics. A well-maintained and properly installed chimney will:

• Light easily and then burn bright

• Build a draft quickly

• Produce no smoke in your room

• Have air flow into the stove when there is no fire
