WHAT CAUSES WOOD TO ROT?
The underlying cause of rot is fungi. Fungi are microscopic organisms that belong to a large group of primitive plants that present themselves as decay and discoloration on wood. Fungi are unable to produce their own food, so they feed on organic materials such as cloth, rattan, paper, leather, and wood.
For fungi to colonize wood, four circumstances must exist, temperatures between 40 and 100 degrees, sufficient moisture, an oxygen supply and a food source. Wood serves as the food source, making your home a prime target for these critters. Eliminating one of these sources can prevent decay from occurring, a sometimes difficult task to accomplish.
Keeping wood dry is the most effective method of preventing rot. Traditionally, decay on the outside of homes has been delayed by using woods that are durable and somewhat moisture resistant (red cedar, redwood, and the like). Less durable woods are treated with pesticides that extend the life of the wood for up to 50 years. You probably know these processes by the term “pressure-treated” wood.
To spot rotten wood in or on your home is not difficult. At first, the wood’s luster seems faded. Its surfaces appear dull, lifeless, and discolored. More advanced stages of rot reveals wood that is visibly discolored, feels spongy, and smells musty. Once decay is present, wood strength deteriorates.
The good news is that if you catch decay before the entire piece of wood is destroyed, you can replace or repair it. Our experienced North Atlanta contractors are adept at rotten wood replacement and repair
